There’s just something special about a handmade item, from photo frames to hand-knit caps and scarves. Creative crafters have a list of essential tools for crafting projects, and these items are likely to be on that list:
When you’re cutting fabric, paper, or cardboard, you need something to protect the surface of the table you’re working on. A so-called “self-healing” mat protects your work surface and “heals” its own surface. It is composed of many tiny parts that come back together again after a knife or cutter pushes them aside when cutting paper or fabric.
When it comes to scissors and crafting, one size definitely does not fit all. You’ll need at least one pair each of fabric scissors, sharp straight scissors, microtip scissors, and pinking shears.
Paper cutter or trimmer
Not the same as scissors—a paper cutter can chop multiple sheets of paper very precisely and trim the edges along a grid so they match perfectly.
High-temp, low-temp, or dual-temp, a glue gun is a must for any crafter who works with wood, plastic, fabric, foam, or paper. High-temp glue guns are good for projects using wood, metal, or cardboard; low-temp glue guns are for paper, foam, or fabric.
Framing or upholstery projects will be fast and easy with the right staple gun. These tools are useful to fasten wood to wood, canvas to frames, or fabric to furniture. Staple guns are good for large craft projects that require sturdy, durable fasteners.
Precise cutting is the domain of the X-ACTO knife. Get one with a safety cover and lock it up if you have young kids!
These come in all sizes and shapes and can cut out tags or cards with scalloped or rounded edges. The classic old one-hole punch is useful for making holes to run twine or ribbon through for decorative binding.
Pillows, drapes, tablecloths, and placemats all can be your own creations (not to mention dresses, pants, and skirts) with a good sewing machine.
You may be decorating delicate handmade ornaments or larger figurines and vases. Keep a great set of paintbrushes on hand in different sizes for all occasions.
Crafters are endlessly creative. These tools help with paper, fabric, foam, wood, plastic, and paint, and while it’s a good start, this isn’t a complete list of essential tools for crafting projects. You’ll find many more specialized tools at your local craft store for your particular project.
