Initially, I was thinking of writing about how to get rid of bad habits but to get rid of bad habits, first, you need to think about what good habits you can replace them with. So instead I decided to write about ways to start and maintain good habits.
Is there a good habit that you’ve tried to start but find it hard to maintain?
I know sometimes it could be difficult to maintain a good habit and make it stick. I want to share with you some tips that have helped me, which are very simple but powerful.
STEP 1| START WITH ONE HABIT
The mistake I have done in the past is to want to start a lot of new habits all at once. Like when it’s the beginning of the year and people make their new years resolutions but never stick to them because it’s usually a long list of different habits they want to attain. That long list of new goals and habits you want to accomplish can be very overwhelming and most people will just give up.
So start with one big habit at a time and once that habit becomes a part of you, you can start with the next one.
STEP 2| WRITE IT DOWN
Write down your habit somewhere you would see it every day. Maybe you could write it in a post it note and put it on your desk or vanity. I personally write it down in my planner every day so that I don’t forget.
But obviously just writing it down won’t help you achieve it. So the next step is to…
STEP 3| SET AN ALARM
This is the one thing that has helped me stick to a habit because I set an alarm for it.
For example:
A while back I wanted to start practicing gratitude every day but there would be some days that I would simply forget.
So what helped was to set an alarm during the day to spend at least 15 minutes a day to write in my journal all that I was grateful for.
Once I did this for over a month, it became a part of me and I didn’t need a reminder anymore to practice gratitude. Not only did this help me remember to practice gratitude but doing this helped me rewire my brain to feel grateful for all that I have instead of focusing on all that I lack.
STEP 4| TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
Every week try your best to track your progress. Sit down and reflect on the week because you need to see how you are doing and if you are actually practicing the habit every day.
STEP 5| CELEBRATE YOUR WINS
If every week that goes by you are progressing and the habit is becoming a part of who you are now, don’t forget to reward yourself for it. It’s not easy to keep up a good habit, it takes discipline and practice for that habit to become a part of you.
We usually tend to go after one thing and then once we attain it, we go on to the next thing. We never appreciate all the hard work we put in to accomplish that goal so make sure to celebrate your wins.
TIP #1 | STAY INFORMED
When I wanted gratitude to become a habit and something I do every day, I read books about gratitude, watched videos, and read articles so that I wouldn’t forget about it. Now gratitude has become a part of me and I am such a different person now.
TIP #2 | DON’T BE TOO HARD ON YOURSELF
You have to be patient with yourself and have confidence that you can achieve any good habit you want as long as you never give up. There will be some days that you forget but don’t let that discourage you, just see every day as a fresh new start.
Stick to your habit and never give up because in due time it will become a part of YOU! 🙂

Keeping a habit tracker in my Bullet Journal helped to “train” myself into a new habits! I also learned to associate certain cues with a habit, such as when my alarm goes off, I immediately sit up in bed and meditate.
